There is no homework today, but the students were given the fortnightly letter.

Please take note of a few things:

1. Students can borrow the NLB books in school on 9 and 10 April 2014. They need to bring their EZlink in order to do so.

2. School dismissal on 11 April 2014 will be at 12.45pm.

3. Please fill up the 2014 sibling survey for P1 registration. NIL returns are required.

4. I will give the students particulars form tomorrow for updating. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Math - Solving Word Problems

We use the Polya Method when solving word problems.

Understand

Read the word problem at least 2 times and highlight the important information

Plan

At this stage, the students are taught the model drawing method to solve the word problem.

Students draw out the models and decide which operation to use.  

(Note that Model drawing is not the only way to solve word problems.)

Do

Students write down the number statement. Some students may need to do working to get their answer.

Check

Students check if their answer is reasonable and make sense.

Models

Students have learnt the following models:

Part-whole model is usually used when there is addition or removal of items from a group.

Comparison model is used when there are two different items and we are trying to compare them. The word 'than' is often used in such questions.

Math - Multiplication

Students get to use the small bricks to learn Multiplication - groups and number in the groups. They were given questions and they have to solve them by using the bricks and getting them into the correct number of groups and number in the groups.

Sorry if there is some confusion. Students have to do the first 4 pages of Chapter 4. That will include drawing the models. I have already gone through the models with the students in the class while doing the Mental Sums.
